20 Year Anniversary Celebration Weekend!

Written by

Kyoshi Jay Haynes, the Kazoku Karate Budokai, and the Family Karate Center in Colorado Springs are delighted to announce the 20th Anniversary Celebration Weekend for students and invited guests.  This three day event will include a Friday night meet and greet, Saturday training seminars with the top Kazoku Karate Budokai instructors, an open workout on Sunday, and an awards banquet complete with a black belt extravaganza on Saturday night!  This special, once in a lifetime event will occur on July 27-29, 2012.

Instructors will include Kyoshi Haynes, Sensei Jeffrey Nester, Sensei Tina Nance, and Sensei Deb Cupples.  The banquet will include dinner, awards presentations and the black belt extravaganza.

The Family Karate Center dojo was first opened on August 1, 1992 on North Carefree and Oro Blanco under Terry Bryan as the east location of the American Black Belt Academy chain of schools.  It was originally 3600 square feet.  Kyoshi Haynes was at the grand opening, and ran the dojo for the next two years under the direction of Hanshi Bryan.  He purchased the school on November 1, 1994 and renamed it the Family Karate Center.  In 2003, the dojo was expanded another 1200 square feet.  In 2008, Kyoshi Haynes moved the dojo to the current location at 3617 Betty Drive, further expanding the dojo from 4800 to 7500 square feet.

Kyoshi Haynes, through the Family Karate Center and later the Kazoku Karate Budokai (Family Karate Association), has taught karate to almost 8000 total students.  He has promoted 260 black belts, many of whom are running their own dojos today!  Kyoshi Haynes has over 30 years of training in the martial arts under some of the top martial arts instructors in the country.

This special 20th Anniversary Celebration Weekend is by invitation only.  We look forward to seeing many of you at this once in a lifetime event!

Saving Students

What is the Hardest Part About Being a Karate Instructor?

Someone recently asked me what is the hardest part about being a full time professional martial arts instructor.  I must admit, that my career choice is really fantastic almost all the time.  I love going to work everyday!  Think about it... How many people do you know who go to work, take their shoes off, put on their pajamas, and daily change lives for the better?  It's a pretty good gig!

However, to answer the question, I would say that the hardest part is learning the lesson that you cannot save them all.  I can be a lot of things for a child, but I cannot be the parent.  Without the parent's support, I have no ablility to positively shape him.  If a child's parent does not back me up, then I cannot do anything.  As a result, I have learned that I must let that child go.  This is the hardest part, because I care for each and every student who comes into the dojo.

I thank all the parents who bring their children into the Family Karate Center, and thank all the parents who work with me fo the betterment of their children.  You are wonderful, and you have no idea how grateful I am to have the opportunity to be a part of your family!

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing everyone in class.

Sincerely,

Great Video Resource Courtesy of MYB!

I was speaking with my personal karate instructor, Hanshi Ken Baker, the other day and he menioned to me that he had updated a part of the MYB website that I thought Family Karate Center students may find useful.  He has added a series of unlisted videos as reference for MYB members such as ourselves to study at our leasure.  The MYB video page is located on the MYB website and can be found HERE.

You will links to videos of all the 26 Shotokan Katas, 9 Odo Bo Katas (plus the kobudo two person sets), 8 Eagle Claw Forms, 3 MYB Flow (Jujutsu) Katas, and much more.  I hope you will find this as valuable of a resource as I have.

Check it out!
